What about love? … Heart

I stumbled upon this band this evening as I was doing some research on a thought. What about love? What I found was a band from the ’70s called Heart. And as I listened to it, immediately my ears perked up, as I had heard this song before. I didn’t know where, but it was familiar. So I did what every internet-savvy person would do and clicked more YouTube videos. As I immersed myself into their catalog, I stumbled onto their Rock and Roll hall of fame ceremony.

Their story was simply ahead of their time. “Heart” was a female duo of “front” (women) who had successfully led an all-male band. And what’s even more impressive is that these women were sisters. Ann & Nancy Wilson made up the leads of this band. And they were impressive. Ann, with her soulful singing, and Nancy shredding both the acoustic and electric guitars, made them not only powerhouses but leaders. And by the way, the late Chris Cornell inducts them, and his induction of them is powerful.

A couple of things I wanted to share this fantastic band.

  1. They didn’t care if they were women. They rocked, and they existed in a male-dominated time, and they didn’t care.
  2. They did not lean on the men that started in the band. When it came time, they made hard decisions and fired band members and replaced them.
  3. They were not going to accept the forever duo label. Heart’s sisters both found time for themselves, sometimes on purpose, and sometimes dictated by life. They launched solo careers, and were successful, and found time later on in life to come back together.
  4. They weren’t going to let anyone dictate how they were going t. One of the first record companies they initially signed to, tried to sexualize them overly, and as sisters, they were not thrilled. They even had to fight off rumors that they as sisters they had had a lesbian encounter. So they left that label, joined another, and also “spurned” a hit song, Barracuda.
  5. Life isn’t roses. There were ups and downs in the band. Breakups and reunions. Firings and hirings. But the sisters evolved and persevered, into the rock and roll hall of fame and touring to this day.
  6. Finally, working moms can rock many things. The pair had four children plus nannies and still made touring, and working happen.

A fantastic story that I was fortunate to stumble on and find out a little of what “love is about.”
